Letting the Story Lead
There’s something so special that happens when I stop trying to direct every frame and simply let the story unfold.
I believe the most important thing we can do in family photography is capture you in this exact moment in time. The days may feel long, but the years are so short — and the things we tell ourselves we’ll remember forever are often lost in the blur of everyday life.
So often in family photography, the temptation is to chase the “perfect” shot: everyone smiling, looking at the camera, hair smoothed just right. But when I look back at my favorite images, it’s never those. It’s the ones where laughter spills over, a toddler darts off course, or parents exchange a look that says this is our life right now.
That’s why I don’t chase perfection. I’m not after forced smiles or stiff poses. I’m after connection. I want to see how you laugh together, how you comfort each other, how you love.
Because that’s where the truth lives. That’s why I let the story lead.
When you book a session with me, you’re not just getting photographs — you’re getting space to breathe, space to play, space to be. And from that space, the real magic comes alive: the way your daughter tugs at your hand, the way your son refuses to let go of his favorite stick, the way you all move forward together.
When I step back and let you set the tone, the most honest stories unfold. A hand reaching out for another. A spark of laughter that can’t be contained. The little ways you show up for each other without even realizing it. These are the details that tell the truth of a family.
For me, photography has never been about making you look like something you’re not. It’s about honoring who you already are — messy, unposed, full of life and love.
Those are the memories you’ll want to hold onto years from now. Not because they were picture-perfect, but because they were yours.
This fall, I invite families to come as they are. Show up ready to play, ready to hug, ready to hold each other close. Forget the camera and use the time to simply be together. When you do, the real magic shines through — the kind of love you’ll want to keep forever.
That’s the heart of my work. That’s why I will always let the story lead.
XO,
Kristy
